Biography

Victor Matveevich Buchstaber [Bukhshtaber] was born in the family of an army officer, in Tashkent, on 1 April, 1943. In 1960 Buchstaber entered the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of the Tashkent State University. On the initiative of the Department of Higher Geometry and Topology, in 1964 he was transferred to the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of the Moscow State University. In 1966 Buchstaber graduated from the Moscow State University. In 1966-69 he was a postgraduate student in the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of the Moscow State University, under the supervision of S.P. Novikov and D. B. Fuks (Fuchs). Upon the completion of his post-graduate studies, in 1970 he defended his PhD dissertation “Cohomological operations in generalized cohomology theories”. In 1971 he was awarded a Young Scholars Prize of the Moscow Mathematical Society for his contribution to K-theory and cobordism theory. In 1984 he defended his dissertation “Two-valued formal groups. Algebraic theory and topological applications” towards a DSc degree in physical and mathematical sciences. In 2006 V. M. Buchstaber became a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Now V.M. Buchstaber is a principle researcher in the Department of Geometry and Topology of the Steklov Mathematical Institute.

In 1969, on completing the post-graduate program Buchshtaber began to work at the All-Union Research Institute of Physical, Technical, and Radiotechnical Measurements, where he made his way from a research assistant to the head of the Laboratory of Complex Information Systems Metrology and Mathematical Modelling. While at the Institute of Physical, Technical, and Radiotechnical Measurements, he governed large-scale parts of government programmes.

Since 1996, he was working on a part-time basis as a senior researcher in the Department of Geometry and Topology of the Steklov Mathematical Institute. Since 2002 he works full time in the Steklov Mathematical Institute and still holds a part-time position at the All-Union Research Institute of Physical, Technical, and Radiotechnical Measurements.

Since 1993 Buchstaber has been teaching in the Department of Higher Geometry and Topology of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of the Moscow State University, since 2000 as a professor. Since 2007 he works as a principle researcher at the A.A Kharkevich Institute for Information Transmission Problems of the RAS. In 2005-2010 V.M. Buchstaber also worked as a professor of the Manchester University on a part-time basis.

Since 1994 Buchstaber has held valuable scientific and administrative positions in international and Russian scientific organizations. He is a member of the governing body of the Moscow Mathematical Society (since 1994), and in 2010 was elected its vice-president. From 2001 till 2008 he was a member of the Executive Committee of the European Mathematical Society. Now he is a member of the National Committee of Mathematicians of the Russian Federation, a deputy chairman of the Expert Committee of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR), a member of the Expert Council on Mathematics and Mechanics of the Higher Certification Committee of the Russian Federation, a member of the Scientific Council of the French-Russian Poncelet Laboratory of mathematics, informatics and mathematical physics, under the auspices of the RAS, IUM and CNRS.

V.M. Buchstaber is a deputy editor-in-chief of the “Uspekhi Matematicheskikh Nauk” journal (since 1995), a member of the editorial board of the “Funktsional’nyi Analiz i ego Prilozheniya” journal (since 1995), a member of the editorial council of “Teoriya Veroyatnostei i ee Prilozheniya” journal (since 1997), a member of the editorial board of the “Moscow Mathematical Journal” (since 2001), a member of the editorial board of the “Tbilisi Mathematical Journal” (since 2006), a member of the editorial board of the “Trudy Matematicheskogo Instituta im. Steklova” (since 2008).

As a member of the programme and organizing committees, he does much work in arranging international mathematical conferences in Russia and abroad. In 1998 Buchstaber was the chairman of the organizing committee of the international conference “Solitons, Geometry and Topology: on the Crossroads” which was dedicated to the 60th birthday of S. P. Novikov. In 2004 and 2008 he was the co-chairman of satellite conferences of European Mathematical Congresses. In 2008 Buchstaber was the chairman of LXXI Moscow Mathematics Olympiad.

In 1974 V.M. Buchstaber was invited to the International Congress of Mathematicians in Vancouver (Canada) as a speaker. He gave honorary invited talks in many leading research centres around the world. He was invited as a principal lecturer (Adams memorial lecturer) to the J. F. Adams Memorial Conference in Manchester, Great Britain (1995), to the Joint Brandeis-Harvard-MIT-Northestern Mathematical Colloquium, Boston, USA (2001), Leicester Special Mathematical Event: The Worlds of Mathematics, Lester, Great Britain (2008), to the Berlin Mathematical School Colloquium, Urania, Berlin, Germany (2010).

In 2004 V.M. Buchstaber was elected a foreign member of the Scotland Academy of Sciences, and in 2010 was made a honorary professor of the Manchester University.

Buchstaber is the author of more than 250 research papers and monographs in mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematical physics, and applied statistics. The cycle of his works “Effective analysis on Riemann surfaces. The theory of Klein sigma functions.” was included into the list of best works of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1999, a cycle of his papers on toric topology was included into the list of best works of the Steklov Mathematical Institute in 2007. V. Buchstaber has founded a large scientific school on algebraic topology and its applications. He has supervised over 20 PhD theses.
