Abstract: Perturbation theory in the temporal gauge for the $S$-matrix generating functional of Yang–Mills field theory is considered. The choice of normal ordering in accordance with the Gauss law picks out an admissible family of propagators and guarantees the perturbative unitarity of the $S$-matrix in the physical subspace.
