Abstract: Certain fundamental concepts and definitions in the thermodynamic theory of the platinum electrode are examined and the concepts of the zero total charge and zero free charge potentials and methods for determination of these quantities are discussed. Data indicating charge transfer in chemisorption processes are analysed and a thermodynamic approach to the analysis of this phenomenon is considered. The influence of the pH of the solution on the structure of the platinum metal–electrolyte solution interface is examined.
