Abstract: Data on the steric hindrance in hydrocarbon molecules have been reviewed. The effect of steric hindrance on the physical properties of hydrocarbons (specific gravity, refractive index, and refraction) and on their ultraviolet and 1H NMR spectra has been demonstrated. The influence of steric hindrance on the synthesis of hydrocarbons in alkylation, oligomerisation, and polymerisation reactions has been examined. A theoretical explanation has been given for a number of reactions occurring anomalously under the influence of steric hindrance.
