Abstract: The results of research into the chemisorptive and catalytic properties of Group VIII metals supported on oxides of transition elements are reviewed. The mechanisms put forward to account for the effects of a strong interaction between metal and support are discussed. The causes of the strong interaction between metal and support are analysed using the results of studies on the properties of (M + EIV)/SiO2 model systems. The bibliography includes 187 references.
