Abstract: Equations are derived for laser mode locking as a result of external acoustooptic modulation by travelling and standing acoustic waves. The steady-state solutions of these equations are obtained. Expressions are derived for the duration and other parameters of Gaussian pulses. An analysis is made of the difference between the behaviour of laser pulses when an external modulation is performed by standing and travelling waves.
