Thermal stresses in laser materials containing inclusions

Abstract:
Calculations are reported of elastic, viscoelastic, and residual stresses which appear in an optically transparent dielectric as a result of heating of a single inclusion by laser radiation. It is shown that the residual stresses may result in damage. The ray paths are considered and the induced anisotropy of a medium with thermal stresses in the vicinity of an inclusion is discussed.
