Professor Peter Davies graduated in 1966 with a First Class Honours degree in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and subsequently carried out postgraduate research in the Physics Department of the same University under the supervision of the late David Tritton. Following the award of his PhD, Professor Davies was awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship by The Royal Society under its European Exchange Programme to undertake research with Gцsta Walin on rotating stratified fluids at The International Meteorological Institute, University of Stockholm. A period of 7 years was then spent as a Research Associate in the Department of Geophysics, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, until in 1980 Professor Davies moved to the University of Dundee to take up a Lectureship in the Department of Civil Engineering. He was awarded a Personal Chair in Fluid Dynamics in 1995, the same year that he was elected to Fellowship of The Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland's premier learned society.
