Siberian Federal University was created following the decision taken by the Government of the Russian Federation on November 4, 2006. The institution integrated four large higher education institutions (Krasnoyarsk State University, Krasnoyarsk State Academy of Architecture and Civil Construction, Krasnoyarsk State Technical University, State University of Non-Ferrous Metals and Gold) into one 43 000-student university. The merger will benefit from an investment of 17 billion rîubles (over $650 million), including funding from the government of the Russian Federation, local government and businesses.

Exciting opportunities

Siberian Federal University will have the size and span of expertise to establish itself as a world-class, competitive university that will undertake research and teaching of international distinction for Siberia's benefit. The exciting opportunities offered through the merger are expected to create many thousands of skilled workers who will provide highly qualified labour for a range of industries and public services. The merger will enable leading industries in Russia and Siberia to compete internationally and to strengthen the Russian contribution to the economic development of the Asian-Pacific region. Groundbreaking university research will contribute to improving the development of local industry - a great return for the university's many stakeholders. In addition to these economic benefits and the increased recognition and opportunities for Siberian Federal District and Krasnoyarsk on the international stage, the merger will also produce teaching and learning benefits and will strengthen public services in Siberia by the development of professional skills.

A long tradition of research

With over 43 000 students and 3329 lecturers (including 8 Academicians and Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as 2087 employees with doctoral and Ph.D. degrees), the university offers 170 programmes at various university levels. Scientific development and the advancement of knowledge at Siberian Federal University are part of a long tradition of research previously begun at the four universities. University researchers are currently involved in a number of projects conducted together with the European Space Agency, NASA, European Council, National Institute for Environmental Studies (Japan), etc. Additional funding will benefit both the development of science and regional scientists, who will have better career opportunities from international competitiveness and the raised national and international profile of the new larger university.
