Founded in 1961, The Graduate Center is the doctorate-granting institution of The City University of New York. A nationally unique consortium, most of The Graduate Center's 1600-member faculty pool are drawn from leading scholars based at other CUNY colleges, augmented by a core group of about 125 Graduate Center appointments. Programs in the humanities, social sciences, and mathematics and some nonlaboratory science course work are offered at The Graduate Center. Science research and the professional programs (Business, Engineering, Criminal Justice, Social Welfare) are located on CUNY college campuses, plus some programs have research affiliations with New York City's world-class cultural and scientific institutions.
