Abstract: In 1918 Poland had reunited into one nation, and at first in Warsaw then in Lvov two strong mathematical schools appeared. There were set theory school with Sierpinski as a leader and functional analysis school with Stephan Banach as a leader. Our first lecture is about their history and fruitful activity.
