Abstract: In our talk, we will tell about the origin of the concept of an elliptic function and the period of the theory formation. Special attention will be paid to Abel, Jacobi, Weierstrass, and Somov's studies. Based on the proof of Abel's theorem, we will show a representation of elliptic functions in terms of theta functions. We will also dwell on the relevance of this theory in some problems of mechanics in the 19th century.
