Abstract: Networks pervade virtually every aspect of our lives, from the way we interact with one another to the way our cells interact to provide the wide range of biological functionality required for our organs and bodies to function properly. Networks of interacting entities can be found from the smallest, quantum scales to the cosmic web structure of the known universe, virtually at every level in between. In this talk I will give a brief introduction to the science of networks, which develops an understanding of how the topology and the dynamics of the interactions between the elements of a system contribute to the behavior of the system as a whole; how novel, system level functionality emerges from these interactions; how networks break down and how they may be controlled.
