Abstract: The new subject content in mathematics for secondary education in Russia includes elements of probability theory and statistics. Arguments in favour of this include reference to “an international experience”. However, this remark is confusing since it is not clear what the experience is.
The aim of the talk is to describe in full detail the present-day subject content and learning outcomes in probability theory and statistics in UK schools at different levels (including pre-higher education), textbooks and exams. We devote a special attention to GCSE and A-level GCE maths exams which can be thought of as a counterpart of the common state examination in our country. We also touch upon the problems of UK secondary mathematical education. Specific consideration is given to “the grade inflation” and the related changes to GCSE and A-level maths (the latter plays the role of mathematics admission test to UK universities). We also describe requirements on probability theory and statistics of Cambridge Pre-U Mathematics (an alternative qualification for students aiming for top universities). Besides, we compare syllabi, exams and teaching practice of probability theory and statistics in UK schools with those in our schools.
