Abstract: A terse description will be provided of the origin and history of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, an international organization of scientists and other eminent personalities that began in 1957 and played a significant role in bringing about various important arms control developments (especially involving weapons of mass destruction: nuclear, chemical, biological) and the end of the Cold War. Current activities of Pugwash will also be outlined.

I was involved in International Pugwash activities from 1965, served as Secretary General from 1989 to 1997 and in that capacity accepted in Oslo (10 December 1995), on behalf of Pugwash, the Nobel Peace Prize jointly awarded to Joseph Rotblat and to Pugwash for their efforts to diminish the part played by nuclear arms in international politics and in the longer run to eliminate such arms.
