Abstract: Stochastic layer is a physical term for a dynamically invariant domain in which separatrices of a hyperbolic fixed point of a near-integrable two-dimensional symplectic map are situated. This domain is bounded by 3 invariant curves and has the form of a “thick eight”. In this construction the hyperbolic fixed point can be replaced by a hyperbolic periodic point.
