The Hopf lemma and a geometric problem

A. D. Alexandrov proved that a compact hypersurface embedded in R'n, with constant mean curvature is a sphere. Assuming a suitable monotinicity condition for the mean curvature, a symmetry property is established. The talk is expository and will contain some open problems.
