I strongly believe in the inter-relation of the various fields in the mathematical and computer sciences,
and I use my talents to work on whatever problems I find interesting and challenging. Some of the research areas I've been interested include: Optimization,
Control,
Calculus of Variations,
Optimal Control,
Invariant Theory,
Differential Equations,
Mathematical Physics,
and Numerical Analysis.

Delfim F. M. Torres was born August 16, 1971, in Nampula, Mozambique. He is currently Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Aveiro (UA), Portugal; Coordinator of the Control Theory Group (cotg) of the Centre for Research on Optimization and Control (CEOC); Editor-in-Chief (Mathematics) of the International Journal of Mathematics and Statistics;
Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Applied Mathematics & Statistics; Editor of the Scientific Proceedings of Riga Technical University, in series "Computer Science"; and Member of the Editorial Board (Math & Statistics) of the Scientific Journals International (SJI). From 2002 to 2004 he was in the Directive Council of the Department of Mathematics
of UA.
Delfim F. M. Torres received his Diploma ("Licenciatura")
honors degree in 1994 on Computer Science Engineering (5 years full time course) from University of Coimbra, Portugal. In 1998 he received his M.Sc. on Optimization and Control Theory (2 years full time course), and four years later his Ph.D. on Mathematics with the Russian mathematician Andrey V. Sarychev (3 years full time research), both degrees from UA.
He has supervised 3 M.Sc. dissertations (UA), 2 Ph.D. thesis
(one from University of Cape Verde, the other from UA),
and 2 Post-doc (3 years full-time research project);
2 more M.Sc. dissertations, 2 more Ph.D. thesis,
and 1 more Post-doc are in progress. He was also
host supervisor of 2 Ph.D. students with European Marie Curie Fellowships. Delfim F. M. Torres has written more than 100 scientific and pedagogical publications, including research papers in first class international journals with referee,
refereed conference proceedings, chapters in books,
and books (as author and also as editor). From his list of publications, and by the beginning of February 2008, 61 research papers are available as open source E-Prints at arXiv; 36 appear in MathSciNet; 22 in Zentralblatt MATH; 18 in Scopus; and 19 in ISI.
Delfim F. M. Torres has 13 years of excellent teaching in Mathematics both to undergraduate and postgraduate students
on Mathematics and Science and Engineering, in Portugal and abroad. He has held positions of Invited Professor in Mozambique, France, and Cape Verde; has been Erasmus Professor in Poland and Latvia; and Visiting Professor in Italy, Georgia (Caucasus), France, Latvia, Ukraine, and Poland. He is member of Scientific Committees and invited and plenary speaker at several international conferences. His current research interests include several topics in the areas
of the Calculus of Variations and Optimal Control, and its connections with the Mathematical Theory of Control and Mathematical Physics.
Delfim F. M. Torres is married to Elisabete Almeida since 2003, who is a teacher of Mathematics at the High School.
They have one daughter (born in 2004) and one son (born in 2006). More details about Delfim F. M. Torres
