The averaging method is generalized and used to investigate a wide class of nonlinear oscillations and waves in media with slowly and smoothly varying parameters. The suggested methods are used to analyze oscillations and waves in physical systems and also to study topoghraphic Rossby waves on the $-deta$-plane over an anisotropic bottom relief in the one- and two-layer ocean models (in collaboration with M. A. Zhdanov).
