The department of mathematics was stablished in the fall of 1975 with a faculty of one and in the fall of 1996, thirty-seven students enrolled in the mathematics program it offered.

To-day the student body consists of 565 day students and 150 evening students studying at the undergraduate level, 60 students working towards a master degree, 43 students in the M.Phil. program and 18 doctoral candidates.

The department offers a bachelor programs in the fields of pure and applied mathematics and students have the choice of majoring in any of six branches. It also offers master degree and doctoral programs in pure and applied mathematics as well as an M.Phil. program .

It is a matter of pride that in 1980 it awarded the first doctoral degree in mathematics in all of Iran. Moreover the second and third doctoral candidates in mathematics to be awarded degrees in the country were also graduates of this department. Of the students who have graduated, 415 have obtained a bachelor degree, 208 a master degree and 41 a doctorate.
