The Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) of the Université de Montréal was founded in 1969. Currently under the direction of professor François Lalonde, the Centre's mandate is to serve as a national centre for fundamental research in mathematics and their applications. The CRM's scientific personnel includes more than one hundred members and post-doctoral fellows. Further, the Centre hosts from year to year a large number of guest researchers.

The CRM coordinates advanced courses and is instrumental in the training of young researchers. Throughout the world one finds numerous researchers who have had the opportunity to complete their research training at the CRM. The Centre is a major meeting place where all members benefit from a large number of scientific exchanges and collaborative projects.

The CRM is mainly financed by the Université de Montréal, by the Fonds FQRNT (Le Fonds québécois de recherche sur la nature et les technologies), and NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council). In 1984, NSERC conferred upon the CRM the status of national centre. The Centre's researchers are also awarded individual research grants by a variety of funding sources, notably NSERC and Fonds FQRNT. Furthermore, an endowment fund has been created for the CRM thanks to the generosity of Dr. André Aisenstadt.

The CRM's scientific activities fall into two principal categories: research projects undertaken by teams, and thematic activities organised on a national or international scale. These thematic activities are open to all disciplines and involve researchers from the Centre and from other universities. In order to assure the widest possible diffusion of the participants' research results, the CRM launched, in 1989, a publication programme.

The structure of the Centre is composed of a Director, the Assembly of members, the Bureau de direction, and the Advisory Committee. The Centre falls under the jurisdiction of the Executive Committee of Université de Montréal via the intermediary of the vice-rector of research.
