The Department of Applied Mathematics II provides tuition at the FIB, ETSEIT, FME and FNB. In addition, it collaborates in several doctoral programmes in applied mathematics, artificial intelligence, technical and computer applications of statistics and operations research and optimisation.

The Department carries out research activities related to applied algebra, applied analysis, algebraic geometry and its applications, computational geometry, mathematical logic and its applications, discrete mathematics, qualitative reasoning and decision technologies, foundations and applications of game theory, number theory and dynamic systems. The Computational Geometry and Discrete Mathematics Group is classed as a consolidated research group and, this year, the DURSI has also considered the Number Theory Group a consolidated group within the framework of the Third Research Plan of Catalonia. Members of the Department have organised the Eighteenth Annual ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) Symposium on Computational Geometry and a number of other events.
