The Department of Mathematical Sciences (named Department of Mathematics) was founded at the same time as the Faculty of Science on 20 August 1954. Svend Bundgaard, the first professor at the department, was in charge of structuring the department and headed the department until he became the rector of the University of Aarhus in 1971. The first students were admitted in 1956 and the department had its own buildings in 1958. The department moved into the present buildings in 1967. Besides the conventional mathematical disciplines, mathematical analysis, geometry, and algebra, research groups in probability theory, statistics and computer science were established. In 1971, formal departments under the Department of Mathematical Sciences were established, i.e. in mathematics, theoretical statistics and computer science. In 1986, the department of statistics was extended to include operations researchers transferred from the Department of Economics at the Faculty of Social Sciences. The new University Law of 1996 brought changes to the Faculty, and the formal structure of the department was altered. At the same time, the name of the department was changed to the Department of Mathematical Sciences to reflect the broadness of the ongoing research. On the 1st of January 1998, the Department of Computer Science became an independent department under the Faculty.
