Main directions of fundamental researches of IGEM, that has got its present status in 1955, had been inherited from several former institutions of USSR Academy
of Sciences: Petrographic (PETRIN), Mineralogical (MIN) and Geochemical Institutes, which were established in 1930 on the base of former Geological/Mineralogical Museum of Russian Academy of Sciences. Before their transfer from Leningrad to Moscow in 1934, MIN and Geochemical Institutes had been united to form LIGEM (Lomonosov Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Crystallography) that was headed by Academician A.E. Fersmann who was before the Director of MIN and of Geochemical Institute.
Total scientific staff of the Institute is 254 scientists including 56 Doctors of Science (from them 5 are Academicians
and 10 — Corresponding Members of RAS), and 125 Candidates of Science (= Ph.D).
