Department of Mathematics contributes to the introductory teaching in mathematics for DTUs engineering students at bachelor level. Later in the study programme more advanced courses are given for master students and PhD students.

The primary teaching task for the Department of Mathematics is to disseminate, through introductory and advanced courses, knowledge the mathematics which constitutes the scientific basis for an education in engineering. Subjects potentially of engineering interest but which have yet to become fully established in the engineering sciences are also be covered in advanced courses.

The main teaching workload of the department lies in courses given in the first 4 semesters of the masters curriculum, covering linear algebra, calculus in one and several variables, and fundamentals of analysis (e.g., systems of ODEs — ordinary differential equations). In mid-level courses subjects like logic and algebra, probability theory, graph theory, differential geometry and complex analysis are covered. In the area of more advanced subjects, courses in functional analysis, partial differential equations, coding theory, topology, and non-linear ODEs are given. These courses form the basis for advanced studies and project work. Some students doing project work carry out their final two years within the ECMI industrial mathematics programme (ECMI: European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry).

Finally, the department offers Ph.D.-courses, usually with varying subjects dependent on student interest. The department participates in the DCAMM International Graduate Research School in Applied Mechanics.

The department also participate in Sidefagssupplering for highschool teachers.
