The Institute of Mathematics and Informatics is a state scientific institute — a budgetary scientific research institution, set up to pursue important long-term scientific researches at international levels for the economy of Lithuania and international cooperation. The chief activities of the Institute are scientific researches and experimental development.
The trends for scientific research of the Institute are approved by of Government of the Republic of Lithuania after the presentation prepared by the Ministry of education and science, having analysed the proposals of the Lithuanian Science Council and the state institutions concerned.
The scientific activity of the Institute is concentrated in 14 scientific departments (6 departments of the mathematical trend and 8 departments of informatics and informatics engineering). In some of the departments, sectors or research groups are established to execute particular projects.
There are 127 researchers in the scientific departments, 32 of which are doctors habilius (27 — professors) and 47 doctors (17 — docents).
In order to pursue doctoral studies, Mathematics and Informatics chairs have been set up in the Institute. There are 38 doctoral students: 30 of them are full-timers and 8 are extramural students (by correspondence).
