The Far-Eastern State Technical University is a leading higher educational institution in the Russian Far East and a successor of the Oriental Institute, which was founded in 1899. Since it's foundation the FESTU has grown into a scientific and educational center thus having started the development of the higher education in the Far East. Nowadays the FESTU students study for degrees in more than 100 programs and qualifications.

The FESTU is one of the largest universities in the Russian Far East. Almost all the industrial enterprises of the Far-Eastern region have employed graduates of the University. The number of alumni is over 600,000, who are primarily engineers in different fields: shipbuilders, mining engineers, civil engineers, radio engineers, architects, and mechanical engineers. Recently, the University has started programs in economics, liberal arts, political and social sciences. Among those who gradu-ated in the past 10 years, there are already a significant number of interpreters, social workers, political scientists, lawyers, economists, instructors and PR specialists. Many of the FESTU alumni are politicians and top managers of the Far-Eastern enterprises and businesses.

At present the FESTU is an extensively developed structure consisting of 15 Institutes, 30 faculties, 70 departments, 14 Branch Campuses and representative offices in different towns of Russia and abroad.

The student body of all the Institutes, Branches, and training centers of the University is more than 17,000 full-time and part-time students.

The FESTU?s faculty consists of more than 800 instructors in total, including 150 Doctors of Sciences and Professors (highest academic degree and rank in Russia), over 400 Candidates of Sciences and Associate Professors.

The FESTU is a nationally supported University controlled by the Ministry of Education of Russia. Due to this fact, 80% of all students do not pay tuition. Students are usually admitted from the Far East and Siberia, international students come primarily from China and Korea.
