    For many years this prominent specialist on strength and reliability of aircraft structural elements who became the first director of the new Institute had been holding the Rector's post at the Ufa Aviation Institute (now the Ufa State Aviation Technical University).

    At present the Institute of Mechanics is headed by Said F. Urmancheev, an expert in the field of multiphase systems and nonlinear dynamics.

    Among the staff members that form the Institute's intellectual potential are 1 Academician (Actual Member) RAS, 1 Associate Member RAS, 22 Doctors. Main research topics include: deformed solid mechanics; fluid and gas mechanics; theory of automatic control systems. Studies are also performed on differential mechanics equations and computer technologies.

    Investigations into deformed solid mechanics have been pioneered by the founder of the Institute Professor Mavlyutov. The advances in this subject are also associated with his name. These are sophisticated research of stress concentrators and their influence upon reliability of aircraft structural elements under complex stress state and high temperatures, and development of new efficient investigative techniques and computational methods for screw joints. Today this Laboratory is guided by Associate Member RAS Professor Marat A. Ilgamov, a noted specialist in the field of hydroelasticity and dynamics of deformed systems. Under his supervision works are being carried out to research into dynamic stability and vibrations in fluid-filled pipe systems. New effects have been found in the behaviour of such systems, among them are loss in stability and transition to such an interesting effect as vibrations.

    Mechanics of multiphase systems is presented in the Institute with Academician Robert Nigmatulin's school. The major achievements are in the elaboration of a theory of gas bubble supercompression in liquid. Mechanisms have been discovered in producing superhigh pressures and temperatures, when an amazing phenomenon does occur — this is gas luminescence in the bubble under ultrasonics. At studying bubbles under the action of sound waves it has been also revealed that bubbles can gather in clusters and, under definite conditions, obey the laws of collective behaviour. The results of investigations of this sort may form the basis of highly efficient technologies, for instance, in chemical industry. The impact of ultrasound is known to activate chemical reactions, that is to serve as their catalyst.

    Since the very foundation of the Institute the research on the automatic control theory is guided by Professor Barry G. Iliasov. Under his supervision works are being made on elaborating frequency methods in analysis and synthesis of algorithms to control dynamic objects of different classes — aircraft power plants and ground-based power systems.

    The primary role in the research works of the Institute is played by mathematical models of the phenomena in question and procedures for solving equations they are described by. Modern computational techniques have found wide application in the Institute at solving the problems on gas-vapour-liquid flow in heating tube furnaces, studying regularities of the motion of anomalously viscous liquids in heat exchanger channels, mathematical modelling of catalytic reactors, and investigating into multiphase flows in pipes containing porous media. A further breakthrough in the field of computational mechanics is supposed on the basis of parallel computations that enable to efficiently apply computational resources (systems, software).

    The most significant results found their reflection in many papers written by staff members of the Institute. Less in a decade there appeared 19 monographs, over 300 articles issued in academic journals both in Russia and abroad, and also two books of the Institute transactions. Seventeen inventors' certificates and three patents of the Russian Federation were received.
