  • Institute of Mathematical Problems of Biology RAS, Pushchino, Moskovskaya obl., RussiaThe Institute of Mathematical Problems of Biology RAS (IMPB RAS) was founded in 1972. When organized, the Institute received the name of the Research Computing Center (RCC) of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1992 the Research Computing Center was reorganized and renamed into the Institute of Mathematical Problems of Biology.

    The main goal of the Institute was defined as working out of mathematical and computing methods for biological investigations. During its history the Institute followed this direction and in many of its works has progressed to the level of the highest world standards.

    Research work is conducted in the following areas:

    1. study of nonlinear models of the autolocalized states in condensed media;
    2. simulation modeling of the dynamics of biomolecular systems;
    3. asymptotical methods and numerical modeling in investigation of excitation waves;
    4. methods for dynamical systems analysis;
    5. methods for estimation of a green cover biodiversity;
    6. bifurcations in differential equations describing systems with symmetry;
    7. bifurcations in functional differential equations;
    8. neuronetwork models of information processing in brain structures;
    9. growing random graphs and their application in mathematical neurobiology;
    10. development of algorithms and programs for the study of extended genomic sequences: recognition of coding regions and areas of statistical homogeneity;
    11. computer methods for the study of biopolymer primary structures;
    12. development of biopolymer comparison methods and their application to recognition of spatial structure of proteins;
    13. mathematical models in biomechanics;
    14. development of new methods for decoding the structure of biomacromolecular complexes from the data of X-ray scattering and neutron diffraction;
    15. methods of numerical analysis for treatment the data of biological experiments;
    16. development of methods of acquisition, processing and analysis of digital images in biology and medicine;
    17. study of models of potential-dependent ion channels in excitable biomembranes;
    18. analytical solutions of integro-differential equations;
    19. algorithmic and computational maintenance of cell metabolism studying;
    20. development and maintenance of the Joint Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics;
    21. design of new therapeutic preparations from phyto materials.

    Achievements of the Institute during the last 10 years:
    1. theory of charge transfer in DNA and photosynthetic reaction center;
    2. molecular dynamics models of ferredoxin, phospholipid mono- and bilayers of biomembranes, dendrimers;
    3. algorithms and programs for recognition of protein-coding regions in higher eukaryotes;
