At present, Irkutsk State Technical University is functioning according to the continuous education system that covers the following stages: a secondary school, an institution of higher education, programmes for Candidate's and Doctor's degrees, supplementary education. Undoubtedly, this liberal system gives an opportunity to everybody to choose educational stage the most appropriate to his needs. Besides, it enables to find the most talented and promising young researchers and promote their progress.

ISTU diploma is something like 'sign of quality' and it guarantees remarkable knowledge and correspondingly a satisfactory career.

Preuniversity training is based largely on timely schoolchildren vocational guidance. To achieve this aim children vocational schools were established on the basis of many faculties, e.g. 'Avtokad' at the Faculty of Technology and Computerization in Mechanical Engineering, Centre for Children Architecture and Art 'Piramida' at the Architecture Faculty. To enhance the training of future applicants' training the technical college was founded. It gives pupils of the 9 th,10 th,11 th forms an opportunity to receive a practical education that will help them to find a prestigious job. There are two schools in the University: technical lyceum and school named after S.B.Leonov.

Higher Professional Education is realized by means of a multilevel system and grants the following qualifications: 2 years of studying ' incomplete higher education; 4 years 'Bachelor's Degree; 5 years ' graduate specialist with a diploma; 6 years 'Master's Degree, an instructor in a higher educational institution.

The structure of professional training in ISTU corresponds to requirements of federal and regional labour market. The University gives the applicants an opportunity to choose from 82 technical, economical, humanities and art specializations.

There is a full-time, part-time, distance and evening education. There are ISTU branches in all the cities of Irkutsk region and in some other cities outside the region up to Khabarovsk, united into the common network.

Postgraduate education is being carried out under the system of professional enhancement of academic staff ' postgraduate courses leading to the Candidate's and Doctor's degree and available in all technical, economical and humanities areas; for Doctor's degree in mining, geological and metallurgical ones.

Supplementary professional education , retraining, professional enhancement are carried out by Interdisciplinary Regional Centre for Professional Enhancement (IRCPE). IRCPE is an accredited centre implementing international, federal and regional programmes. It trains and certifies people with positions of authority in industries and instructors of higher educational institutions.

IRCPE comprises the Faculty of Teachers Professional Enhancement, the Institute of Supplementary Education and the Siberian-German Engineering Faculty. More than 250 instructors from ISTU and other universities improve their teaching skills annually studying new information technologies, computing, foreign languages and management. The Institute of Supplementary Education offers courses in 41 areas ranging from educational to consulting. Every year 6000 learners enhance their qualification.
