  • Linköping University, SwedenThe university has developed several unique educational programmes that transcend traditional academic borders. This approach was manifested in the creation of Sweden's first MSc programme in Industrial Management and Engineering. Many similar ventures have followed, such as the two programmes: Cognitive Science and Information Technology. Combining humanities and social studies with computer science, these programmes aim at a holistic view of information technology.

Interdisciplinarity is a keyword for the university's research, most notably within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, where research themes — broad problem areas of societal relevance — are addressed: Child Studies, Health and Society, Technology and Social Change, Communication Studies, and Water and Environmental Studies. Research focus in new themes is on Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, Food Studies, Culture Studies, and on Aging and Later Life.

Interdisciplinary graduate schools have been established in other areas as well: in physics and materials science, in electronics and automatic control, in computer science, in engineering design, in biomedical science, in industrial management and engineering. IMIE — the International Graduate School in Industrial Management and Engineering — combines the research environments of a technical university and a business school under the same roof.
