The Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques was created in 1958 through the initiative of Léon Motchane, a Russian industrialist with a passion for science. With the help of Robert Oppenheimer and Jean Dieudonné, as well as the financial support of a number of companies, Léon Motchane was able to create the European counterpart of Princeton's Institute for Advanced Studies.
