Development of north-eastern territories is one of the priorities of the Government of the Russian Federation. Large investment projects will be implemented in the Far East. Yuzhno-Yakutsky hydro-power complex has been already established, tasks on application of renewable energy sources and increase of energy supply security are being realized, operating power transmission lines and substations have been re-constructed and the new ones have been built in the most prospective zones of mineral- raw resources development.
To meet these challenges new formation specialists are required who will be able to find the right solutions in variety of situations.
According to preliminary estimates by the year of 2013 more than 120 thousand new specialists for all industry branches will be needed. The labor market has been studied and analyzed in Magadan, Chukotka, Sakhalin, Kamchatka and the Amur region. Thus, the Far Eastern Federal District has been entrusted to establish two Universities of new formation: Far Eastern and North-Eastern Federal University on the basis of Yakutsk State University named after M. Ammosov. Foundation of a new university in the republic is announced to be a mega project ¹ 1. Quality of training and education, human development are the most important components of the project.
Higher Professional Education of the Republic enters the next level of development. NEFU today is a diversified university possessing large capacity for training, education and research. The university is currently implementing 81 major academic programs; there are 8 institutes, 10 faculties, 5 research institutions, 3 branches.
Today, the University has rich intellectual potential: teaching staff includes 1,400 full-time teachers: more than 152 doctors and 660 candidates of science. Over 22 thousand students study at the University.
University has a modern material and technical base. One of the main components of the campus is modern and comfortable dormitories for students. Graduates of the University represent academic, cultural and administrative elite. The University established long-standing and strong relationship with many foreign universities. They are cooperating in the field of education, student and faculty exchange, holding joint conferences and symposia.
System-wide activities aimed at reforming and improving of the educational process, modernization of research process, radical improvement of human capacities and enrollment rate, infrastructure development, improvement of administrative and organizational systems of the University are included in the "New quality University project".
