The university was established in 1958 under the name of Tehran Polytechnic. It began activities with 5 engineering departments. In 1978 , the university was renamed to Amirkabir University of Technology.
After the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979 the university worked closely with the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology towards the higher education programs when the education was restructured, as part of a Cultural Revolution in harmony with Islamic principles.
In 1982,the university went through a series of reforms in education and research which put forward a new era in its activities. At present, Amirkabir University of Technology offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs for more than 6400 students in 132 disciplines. There are more than 440 academic staff involved with the programs.
The University consists of 14 engineering departments, 7 research centers and 3 campuses.
