Motion of a single hailstone

B. Ya. Lokshin

Lomonosov Moscow State University, Institute of Mechanics
Abstract: A vertical motion (up and down) of a single hailstone in an upward flow of supercooled air is studied with consideration of hailstone mass changes. A mathematical model is developed on the basis of theoretical and experimental data on the process of hailstone growth. This model is used to estimate the height of hailstone ascent, its maximum size, the time of its upward motion, and the time of its return to the initial height. Simple formulas are constructed to calculate the approximate values of these characteristics.
Key words: variable-mass body, single hailstone, mathematical model, qualitative analysis, estimation of motion parameters.
