Method for well placement optimization in oil field development

Abstract: We propose a method for the well placement optimization that allows one for the oil production maximization over a given period of time. The method is based on an empirical approach that assumes the enumeration of possible well positions rather than calculating the gradient of the objective function. This allows one for effective parallelization and, consequently, accelerated performance of the method, and on the other hand, guarantees the global extremum of the objective function. We examine an example of method application for the well placement by using a digital three-dimensional model of an oil field.
