Evaluation of the results of using the RIP protocol in communication systems with dynamic network topology using simulation method

Abstract: The purpose of the paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of using a dynamic routing protocol RIP in communication systems with dynamic network topology, intended for maintenance of transportation facilities. As a basic mathematical model, describing the topological changes in the telecommunications system the model of “flickering” graph is used. The essence of the model of “flickering” graph is a logical representation of topological changes in the network in the form of the evolution of the graph, while the state of the graph changes discretely. In this case, the subsequent graph differs from the previous one in a small increment, which contains information on the number of additions or deletions of edges in the graph. As a result of using the model, there is a transformation of changes in the topological structural component of the communication system of the spatial domain (arising from changes in the positions of the nodes to each other) to the time domain (when topological changes occur during the addition or deletion of edges of the graph). The network operation was studied in software package Opnet Modeler. Comparison of the obtained results with the results of modeling the system due to the dynamic topology in the software package Network Simulator is made. The evaluation showed that by using the RIP network performance is stored at data rate to 64 Mbit/s and the velocity of the assembly up to 80 km/h. In these ranges of data rates and the speed of the unit, the quality of the transmission of multimedia traffic is provided by the delay parameter of information packet from end to end. To ensure reliable transmission of traffic it is recommended to use transport layer protocols to guaranty the delivery of data packets. The results of these studies prove the possibility of using the routing protocol of existing data networks to the RIP in communication systems with dynamic network topology, designed to serve highways.
