Waveguide Modes in Cavity Containing Layered Structure with Alternating Sign of Refractive Index

Abstract:
The article regards beam propagation in open cavity containing a layered structure with left-handed metamaterial. Formation conditions for the gaussian eigenmodes are obtained analytically. In contrast to ordinary cavities, such modes can exist in Fabri–Perrot cavities. The possibility of waveguide eigenmodes with an arbitrary transverse field distribution is investigated, which is also a particular feature of such a cavity.
