Structural transformations in metals at high compression
Yu. Kh. Vekilov, O. M. Krasilnikov State Technological University "Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys"
Abstract:
The structural stability against homogeneous deformation is analyzed for simple and transition BCC and FCC metals under pressure. It is shown that at high compression a crystal lattice becomes instable against shear deformations, leading to new low-symmetry structures. To analyze these structures, the Landau theory of phase transitions with deformation tensor components as order parameters is used. A comparison is made with experimental data on high pressure phases. Prospects are discussed for using the suggested approach to explain structural transformations in solids at high pressure.
