Large Hadron Collider's discovery of a new particle with Higgs boson properties
V. A. Rubakov Institute for Nuclear Research, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow
Abstract:
We outline the results of the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, which announced a new particle with properties consistent with those expected from the Standard Model Higgs boson. At a qualitative level, we describe the roles played by the Englert–Brout–Higgs field and the Higgs boson in the theory of fundamental particles and their interactions. We also discuss prospects for theoretical and experimental studies in the new area of elementary particle physics.
