Abstract: This article treats the biological action of radiation, the methods and technology of irradiation by heavy charged particles, and the advantages to be gained by using heavy charged particles in radiation therapy and radioneurosurgery. Features of the dose distribution and of the biological action of different radiations are discussed. Estimates of the prospects for using heavy particles in medicine are given and the world data on performed studies are summarized.
