Abstract: The structure is investigated of the region near the cathode of a semi-self-maintaining glow discharge. It is shown that at current density values below the normal value, homogeneous structure of discharge is unstable, which leads to localization of current in cathode spots, in which the current density does not depend on the total current like the normal burning mode of a self-maintaining glow discharge.
