On testing outlying observations

Abstract: The paper deals with a Renyi-type criterion testing not only the existence of outlying observations but also discriminating them statistically. The criterion is based on the fact that, when no outlying observations are present, the empirical distribution function for suitably normalized observations converges, on the tails, to the Poisson process.
