Abstract: Brief review of existent methods for speech and text understanding is presented based on analysis of publications in science journals and leading conferences on speech research. Two different approaches to language understanding problem are pointed: 1) approach based on propositional calculus and 2) approach based on meaning recognition (speech intention). The arguments for speech processing paradigm elaborated in SPIIRAS are presented in comparison with conventional approaches
