V. A. Fock and N. N. Bogoliubov and their role in establishing modern quantum field theory

Abstract:
The relation between the Wightman axioms in quantum field theory and the "$S$-matrix" Bogoliubov axioms is discussed. The choice of the Fock representation of the canonical commutation relations for asymptotic field variables is interpreted as a condition for the correct formulation of the relativistic scattering problem.
