Abstract:
A model that describes the melting of a two-dimensional lattice is proposed
and analyzed. The model takes into account orientational fluctuations of
the two-particle distribution function in the melting region. The melting
is driven by the dissociation of bound disclination complexes. Allowance
for the orientational fluctuations makes the first-order transition nearly
continuous.
