Abstract:
The types of invariant configurations admitted by the field equations in
four-dimensional $SU(2)$ chiral models are studied. It is shown that in
the Skyrme model in the second and higher homotopy classes the fields
that realize an absolute minimum of the energy are axisymmetric, while
those in the first class are spherically symmetric.
