Abstract: The review is devoted to a new field of chemistry — femtochemistry. New, in principle, possibilities of investigation and control of chemical reactions by means of ultrashort coherent light pulses are considered. The general concepts are illustrated by numerous examples of femtochemical studies of the dynamics and kinetics of elementary chemical reactions in the gas and condensed phases. The prospects of femtochemistry are discussed. The bibliography includes 172 references.
