Abstract: Data published during the last 15 years on the intercalation of metal and n-alkylammonium ions, organic molecules and organometallic complexes in vanadium(V) oxide xerogel are generalised and described systematically. The possible mechanisms of intercalation processes are considered. The possibility of using hybrid materials in electrochemical and optical devices and as precursors for the preparation of anhydrous and nanotubular forms of oxide compounds is discussed.
