Abstract: The physicochemical principles of adiabatic compression and its characteristics and potentialities in studies on the kinetics and mechanism of thermal gas-phase reactions are examined. The results of studying reactions involving fluorine-containing carbenes are presented. Information is given on the high-temperature tautomerism of tetrafiuoroethylene–trifluoromethylfluorocarbene, which has been detected and studied using kinetic spectroscopy during adiabatic compression. The set of experimental data on the pyrolysis and gas-phase isomerisation of perfluoroolefins has been interpreted using the concept of tautomeric changes involving the 1,2-shift of a fluorine atom in olefins.
